Misadventures in Jakarta: Into the Dark We Go

It was 7:00pm and it was night time. Before dinnertime my children were drawing in their sketch pad and I was typing on the notebook. All of a sudden the lights and all other electronics switched off. It was pitch black.

To me, this wasn't unusual as I've been through this before during my previous stays. My children, however, had forgotten as they were younger when it happened before. It was a regular occurrence as every few days the electricity would shut off for about an hour.

My husband, though, came prepared. He had brought with us two wind up torches and a head torch. While the others quickly gathered candles and lighted them, we groped around in our suitcases for the torches and switched on our iphone torches.

The thing was, we didn't know when the electricity would shut down (usually during a storm but if there hadn't been a storm then it was randomly done). It couldn't have happened at a worst time as we were about to have dinner. What else could we do but to gather around the dinner table and have our dinner in semi darkness.

It turned out that the hand torches were pretty useless as we couldn't keep winding when we needed our hands to hold our food. As for the head torch, unless we wanted to blind the other person sitting opposite us then we had to switch it off. To be fair to my husband, they came in handy after dinner when we could wander off, especially the head torch when we wanted to head for the toilet.

I don't know why anyone would think eating a candlelit dinner is romantic, we could hardly see what we were eating. It was pretty much a guess in the dark - was that a fried chicken drumstick or a fried chicken neck with the head attached? It looked much alike in this semi darkness.
